The Series
The River Murray winds for 2560 kilometres through New South Wales,
Victoria and South Australia until it reaches the sea. It is Australia's
largest river, yet much of the land it flows through is close to desert.
Only the life-giving water of the Murray has allowed settlement, agriculture,
rural development and tourism - but that development has come at a cost.
In a series of thirty programs, Wetlands Drylands examines some
of the stories of those who are working to protect and restore Australia's
greatest river. Starting at its mouth, and in the time of Matthew Flinders,
Wetlands Drylands follows the river upstream. On the way it explores
Aboriginal legends and customs, European exploration, the paddleboat
era, agricultural development that followed and takes a close look at
the Murray's future.
The Production
Team
The project was initiated by Deborah Welch (Manager, Radio Adelaide)
and Tony Ryan (Executive Producer). The production of programs about
the River Murray and the adjacent wetalnds and drylands was seen to
be a priority, not just for South Australia, but for all Australians.
Wetland Drylands is also a priority research area within Adelaide
University.
Project Manager Tony Ryan has a long involvement in radio and in particular
with programming of an educational nature. In addition to his work as
Executive Producer, Lifelong Learning at Radio Adelaide, he is very
active in The Australian College of Education and in the adult community
education sector. He was a member of the Ministerial Adult Community
Education Council in SA (1999 - 2001) and is currently a memeber of
the National Advisory Committee for Adult Learners Week 2002.
The Wetlands Drylands Associate Producer is Pam Green. With
a strong background in computing and education, and in addition to her
work on Wetland Drylands, Pam is now working for the ABC.
The Presenter
Wetlands Drylands is presented by Science Communicator Dr Rob
Morrison, formerly of the University of Adelaide's Media Unit, and a
member of the National Environment Education Council. Rob is also well
known as the long time co-presenter of The Curiousity Show on
commercial television.
