Educause in Australasia 2003
Community Radio Papers
Both education and broadcasting have
changed a lot since the licensing of the 'educational'
community
radio stations in the 1970's. There are many ways in
which they are converging, particularly through online
technologies, creating opportunities for all community
broadcasters to make new connections and explore different
ideas for engaging with our communities, earning income
and 'building up capacity' in our station.
Lifelong learning is
both an educaional philosophy and a practical reality
for all of us. People need
- and want - to learn new skills throughout life, and
the set of skills clustered around 'communication',
'community building', 'new technologies' and 'working
in teams' have become more critical in just about all
fields.
This is exactly what community radio broadcasters
do! So it was with these ideas in mind that a group
of community radio people presented papers at the recent
Educause in Australasia 2003 conference
in Adelaide, May 6-9. Hosted by the University of Adelaide,
this large international conference brought together
people working at the intersection of education and
new technologies in areas such as online education
and e-learning, from Neighbourhood Houses to Libraries
and Universities.
